Birth control pills have always been associated with gaining weight. In fact, I have a friend who claims the 30 pounds that she gained started when she began taking the pill.

There are no studies that really say that pills are solely responsible for weight gain. However, they cannot be totally negated as not causing any weight gain as well. When one takes pills, it is but normal for hormone levels in the body to change. After all, the pill is exactly that- extra hormones that you are putting in your body. Hormones can actually contribute to weight loss and gain.

One of the side effects of taking the pill is water retention. This can equate to bloatedness in our bodies. This maybe what many mean when they are talking about weight gain. The pill can also make one’s breasts increase in size, again because of the hormones. This change in the shape of the body maybe still what others mean when they talk about weight gain.

The best thing a woman can do is to observe her body’s reaction if she decides to take birth control pills. She should also try to incorporate exercise and healthy eating into her lifestyle. If she is successful in both, then she won’t gain any extra weight at all.
